History & Background
Designer Sign Systems, with offices in Carlstadt, New Jersey and Fort Lauderdale, Florida, specializes in architectural signage design and sign planning services for medical centers, large corporations, architects, engineers, educational facilities and municipalities.
The company was founded in New Jersey as Designer Sign Company in 1978. Its corporate mission was set to provide high quality signage systems that address both the architectural and engineering criteria required by the clients represented.
Co-founder Anthony J. Barbieri had ten years experience as a successful corporate interior design professional. He assumed the full-time task of design director for the planning and design group. Judith R. Barbieri joined the company to build the firm's new sign manufacturing operation. Her expertise in developing a business strategy took the firm beyond the scope of its original intentions.
The firm opened a second office in Fort Lauderdale, Florida in 1986 with Paul Pierson as Senior Vice President. Paul has extended the market of Designer Sign Systems to include the southern United States, the Caribbean and South America.
In 1987, the company was changed to Designer Sign Systems. Judith Barbieri was named President of the New Jersey office and Anthony Barbieri became President of the Florida office.
Today the firm specializes in design and design/build signage programs, taking advantage of innovative products and services that reflect the experience of its designers. Turn-key programs include the design, manufacturing and installation of architectural signs for hospitals, hotels, casinos, educational facilities, corporate centers and banking facilities, as well as municipal, state and federal signage programs. One of the leading companies in its field, Designer Sign Systems has worked on many of the premier architectural structures in the United States and has successfully completed both national and international projects.
Designer Sign Systems is an active member of the Society of Environmental Graphic Designers (SEGD), the Screen Print International Association (SPIA), the National Institute for Certification of Engineering Technicians, the Eastern State Sign Council and the AIA/CES Educational Program.
The firm has received a number of awards since its founding, including the American Institute of Architects' Award of Merit and Graphic Design USA's American Graphic Design Award. In addition, the firm has been highlighted in Visual Merchandising and Store Design, New Jersey Business, and Healthcare Magazine.
